Panhandle Arts Guild - of North Idaho
Alisa Brown
Alisa Grew up in Bonners Ferry and later moved to Montana. When she was fifteen, she tool her first art class because her mother made her go. She said she might learn something.“When the teacher set me before the drawing exercise, I informed her that ‘I was not looking for a challenge and that I simply wanted to show up to class, create a masterpiece, impress everyone, and go home.’ My teacher found this hilarious”Alisa has been studying with her for five years now.
When she starts a painting, she likes a plan. All that talk of spontaneity and inspiration sounds very poetic and whimsical…but for her, it just ends up catastrophic. She separates the project into steps, blocking main shape, adding the darkest values, and builds from there seeing the color from her subject and applying it to the canvas. Her ultimate goal is to make a brushstroke and LEAVE IT.
As far as subjects go, she tries to evaluate the reference and ask, “Would this make for a strong painting?” rather than, “Awwww, how cute! A little girl in a field of poppies” People say artists have a hard time “making it”.
She is an artist because she believes that is what she was meant to do, it could not be helped. It is her passion, and s far as making it, Alisa is a leader in the world of art.
